The discovery of a pulsar or pulsars orbiting near the Galactic Center (GC) could offer an unprecedented probe of strong-field gravity, the properties of our galaxy's supermassive black hole and insights into the paradoxical star formation history of the region. However, searching for pulsars near the GC is severely hampered by the large electron densities along our line of sight and the scattering-induced pulse broadening of the pulsar emission observed through it. As the broadened pulse length approaches the pulsar period, the periodicity in pulsar emission becomes nearly undetectable. Searches extended to higher frequencies, in an effort to reduce scattering, suffer from reduced intrinsic flux, higher system temperatures and increased atmospheric opacity. We are currently attempting to mitigate the challenges associated with searching for pulsars near the GC by employing new wide bandwidth receivers, upgraded IF distribution systems and novel digital spectrometers in a GC pulsar search campaign at the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia, USA.
Our search will cover two frequency bands, from 12-15 GHz (Ku Band) and 18-26 GHz (K Band), during a total of approximately 30 hours of observations, with expected characteristic 10-sigma sensitivities between 5-10 micro-Jy. Our first observations are scheduled for mid-March 2012. Here we will present the status of our observations and initial results.

The reliability of reporting of life-events was examined in 52 subjects attending clinics. An inventory of events and longer-standing difficulties was administered on 2 occasions, 7–14 days apart. High levels of reliability were found for the number of events, the mean score for distress or change over all events, and for the single event with the highest score. The reporting of individual events was less reliable: only 70 % of those events reported at either interview were reported under the same heading at both interviews. Subjective reactions to events differ in reliability according to the type of response, and they are less reliable for single events than overall. Lastly, the reliability of highly distressing events is in fact lower than for the less distressing. These findings point to some of the shortcomings of inventory methods in life-event research.

The diagnoses were reviewed of 866 women interviewed in 5 community surveys carried out by the Bedford College team. The diagnoses matched commonly held conceptions of who is a case in terms of both severity and type of syndrome. Two methods of replicating the diagnoses are presented, one based on discriminant function analysis and the other based on a simple checklist.

Aims and Method
We describe the development of a pilot personality disorder outreach service. A case series of 13 patients was studied. Data were collected using pro forma, semi-structured interviews and a structured assessment of personality disorder.
ResultsAll personality disorder clusters were represented among the 13 patients. Treatment recommendations usually supported the existing approach – the ‘added value’ of the outreach service was that difficult interpersonal dynamics could be considered and thought through with an objective observer. Opinions differed on whether the service was more useful for the assessment and brief treatment or continuing care teams.
Clinical ImplicationsPersonality disorder services need to develop expertise in all clusters. There is a need to moderate the harsh self-critical attitudes of the care coordinators. The national framework for personality disorder is useful for service development, but the services need to be tailored to the individual needs of specific teams.

We propose a new scoring for Goldberg's (1972) General Health Questionnaire. We argue that the response ‘no more than usual’, to an item describing pathology, should be treated as an indicator of chronic illness rather than of good health, and we score these responses accordingly. We give evidence that this set of responses is associated with other measures of neurotic illness, and that the revised scoring provides a better prediction of caseness than the conventional scoring. The revised scoring is more strongly associated with trait neuroticism, and is more stable in repeated measurement. It is recommended in preference to the conventional scoring for most research and epidemiological purposes.

The size and utilization of the primary group (those with whom one has interaction and commitment) was examined in 50 patients with non-psychotic psychiatric disorder and 50 matched controls. The hypotheses tested were that the patients would have a smaller size of primary group, less contact with its members and an inferior affective quality of interaction with it; and that this deficiency would be most marked in transactions with the principal attachment figure. Patients were found to spend the same amount of time as normals with their primary group, but proportionately more of that time was affectively unpleasant. They had fewer good friends and fewer contacts with persons outside the household. They had fewer attachment figures, almost one half of them reporting that either they had only one, or that they had had no recent contact with those alternatives that did exist. The majority of patients considered that their principal attachment figures gave them insufficient support. The complexity of interpreting these data is discussed.
